Why I became a dietitian
The big question is why I became a dietitian and why I do what I do, now?
From a young age, I was always intrigued by how food impacted my energy levels and mood. I found myself constantly wondering: why would eating certain types or groups of food make me feel more energised, while others left me sluggish? It wasn’t just about the taste or enjoyment of food; I was fascinated by how these different combinations could change how I felt and performed throughout the day. Having a passion for science, I’d also find myself reading into this to better understand how this worked.
As I got older, I realised that this could be a viable career opportunity to share with others how food has a profound effect on how we fuel our bodies, our overall health, and our ability to live optimally. The idea that research would continue to evolve and offer new insights into how we could use food as fuel for better performance and well-being excited me.
That passion led me to study Nutrition and Dietetics, where I delved deeper into the science behind how food works in the body. After completing my degree, I further specialised by obtaining my sports dietetics accreditation, allowing me to work closely with athletes and help them optimise their nutrition to enhance performance. Working with athletes brings me immense satisfaction because I love the challenge of finding those small, impactful changes that can make all the difference.
Today, I primarily work with endurance athletes, including triathletes, marathon runners, and race walkers. It’s a rewarding field, but my long-term goal is to integrate more of my passion for tennis into my work. Tennis has always been the sport I loved growing up, and I’m excited about helping tennis players reach their full potential through tailored nutrition strategies. However, all of sports dietetics is my key interest area. As well as this, I do work with those looking for support with gut health, chronic disease, eating disorders and much more!
